What we learn in three days

THE three days training on investigative internet journalism which conducted by Misa-Tan and facilitated by Peik Johansson, a Journalist from Finland was very useful to everyone attended the training.
It was a useful and skilful time for Journalists in Tanzania to enjoy and to fetch knowledge from Finland through Mr.  Peik. We started the first day to understanding investigative journalism in wide angle.
Different definitions of investigative journalism were given out by all participants in their discussions, some said investigative is not only in negative side, but can be also in a positive way.
We also discussed whether facilitation to someone who want  to give you some potential documents is corruption or not.  We also concluded that investigative journalist should be very honest when  doing his/her job.
We managed to visit various websites like WikiLeaks which founded by Julius Assange and other websites in the world.  And we also open our own blogs and learn how to operate them.
The second day of training we looked about how to search information from the internet, we did some assignments like how to get TANAPA telephone number from the internet, the population of Iringa and  the height of Mount Kilimanjaro.
In that day we also managed to visit some blogs and learn the different between those blogs, especially the comparison between Kenyan blogs and Tanzanian blogs.
We did some assignment about Wangari Maathai, Dambiso Moyo and Leila Lopes. We also learn about how to use Google engine, like how to get news, picture, video, map and other important things in the internet.
The last day we did a wonderful thing, we learn how to add other blogs in our blog address, we also learn about how  to link to the original website if there is something in the text which need more details.
I recommend this training should be for one month or two, because of time we miss a lot of knowledge, we need to know much about  Journalism, that we can manage to change our journalistic style in the country.

Violation of human right in Libya-Amnesty

THE up-rising of Libya amounted to the total violation of human right, compared to what happened to the up-rising of other northern countries, because the army in power and the militias, both involved in the violation of human right in the country. It has been discovered.
This year report of Amnesty International discovered a lot of violation of human right in Libya to both side in the conflict. The report discovered the violation done by Muammar Gaddafi’s forces, they committed war crime throughout the conflict, including by carrying out attacks targeting civilians and indiscriminate attacks.
Amnesty report said that Gaddafi’s forces launched artillery, mortar and rocket attacks against resident areas, and used inherently indiscriminate weapons such as anti-personnel mines and cluster bombs. They also concealed tanks and heavy military equipment in residential buildings.
According to the report which contained 24 pages,  forces loyal to the National transitional Council (NTC), have also committed abuse that in some cases amounted to war crime.
Take an example of a 17 year-old boy from Chad who was beaten near to death, he told Amnesty that anti-Gaddafi’s forces accused him of rape and being a mercenary to Gaddafi.
The report indicated that the arrest was done without arrest warrant, beaten and some times worse on arrest and arrival in detention.
Some 300 prisoners have been interviewed by Amnesty in 11 detention facilities around the capital of Tripoli, Zawiya and Misrata, where they more than half of the of the prisoners are foreigners who suspected mercenaries.
Libyan up-rising started from Benghazi where people complained to be sidelined by Gaddafi regime, being punished because they were not with him, accusing him of dictatorship.
The up-rising in Benghazi was supported by  the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and they started to bomb Tripoli.
The intrusion of NATO in Libya was the result of the resolution number 1973 of the Security Council of United Nation which imposed a ban on all flights in the country’s airspace of Libya. A no-fly zone.
But the implementation of resolution 1973 was contrary to what most members of the Security Council thought. Because the resolution turned in to help rebels to take out by gun the sovereign state of Muammar Gaddafi.
The intrusion of NATO in Libya also the violation of the international law which protect the sovereign state and also violation of human right.

todays lesson

THE trainer Piek Johansson gave us a wide knowledge in how use Google engine to search for latest news, and how to  search for the allocation of the place through internet.
Then we learned how to find the facts in the internet example, how to find telephone number of TANAPA, that you have to find in the google the website of institutions your looking for, or you have to go direct to the website.
He gave us some question like telephone number, last story of President Kikwete in Panda, and how the media in Tanzania report the World freedom Day in May this year, where we found many media in Tanzania gave blackout that day.
We learn how to link direct to the subject you need, example, in the Wikipedia, there are a lot of footnote, so you don’t need to read all the notice, what you can do is to direct to the subject you need.
The trainer gave us a knowledge that before you search to the internet, you have to know what you need, for what purpose and after getting all the facts how to combine them, and coming up with the good story.
He gave us    something to do like story of Professor Wangari Maatahi, Dambisa Moyo and Leila Lpes. We did that and most of us we post in our blogs a draft of our stories.

Training on Investigative Internet Journalism

IN investigative internet Journalism some facts can be obtain through comments of the people in the internet. Example, a  Journalist can send an article about corruption in the sector of health to the Social Media like Jamii Forum.
There, you  will receive a lot of information about corruption in the health sector,  some people will tell you how difficult to get treatment in the hospital without corruption, and the way corruption make someone to receive VIP treatment, even though they don’t  deserve that status.
That information will help you to know how poor people get difficult to receive medical services from government hospitals. In that case, the next step for a Journalist will be to balance that information to the authority.
Another things a Journalist can do his/her investigation from the internet, is to visit the government website, there you will find a lot government’s promises, examples, construction of roads, bridges, crass rooms, hospitals and other projects.
So, a Journalist have to check  the allocation of funds in the budget speech of each ministry, time of implementing the project, and  if   there was a participation of people in the area of the project.
In doing so, a Journalist can investigate whether, the funds allocated to the projects are all used to that purpose and no sign of embazzlement or corrucprion.
And also a Journalist can make a follow up if the implementation is going well and in time.
